Extractor Hood Accessories - All About Carbon Filters

Extractor hood accessories are additional components that enable proper hood functioning. Today, we’ll look into carbon filters.

Accessories for Extraction and Recirculation Modes

A kitchen hood can operate in two modes: open or closed.

Open mode means the unit is connected to ventilation with ducting, and steam and other airborne impurities are expelled outside the room. This is referred to as the hood working in extraction mode. For proper operation, it’s enough to mount the hood correctly and regularly clean the metal filter, which collects grease particles. Typically made of aluminium, the metal filter can be washed in the dishwasher without other dishes at a temperature of up to 50°C.

Closed mode means the hood operates as a recirculating unit, not connected to a separate ventilation duct. To function properly, a carbon filter must be installed. This filter neutralises unpleasant odours and absorbs moisture generated during cooking.

The carbon filter works by utilising small activated carbon pellets of 1-2 mm in diameter. Carbon filters should be replaced regularly, typically every 3-6 months. We recommend replacement every 4 months to ensure it functions effectively. Recirculating units also use a metal filter that collects grease and dirt particles. The hood draws in air, filters and purifies it, then reintroduces it into the kitchen.

It’s estimated that extraction, where the hood is connected to ventilation, is about 20% more effective than recirculation. This is worth considering when planning your home ventilation.

Extractor Hood Accessories - Carbon Filters

Carbon filters are usually installed in two ways:

  • right behind the metal filter (the carbon filter is then mounted above it and has a similar or matching size) – this is called a cassette filter

  • by screwing it onto the hood motor – this is called a round filter

Regardless of filter type, it’s a good idea to leave the hood on for a while after cooking (e.g., for an hour) on the lowest setting to allow the carbon filter to dry and prepare for the next use. This will extend its lifespan. It’s also recommended to switch on the hood at the start of cooking rather than waiting for the vapours to intensify. Carbon filters will also last longer if you cover your pots while cooking.

Globalo carbon filters range from 60 to 120 PLN. The type depends on the hood model being used. It’s essential to check the specific filter required for your appliance before purchasing.

Extractor Hood Accessories - Examples of Carbon Filter Usage

Carbon filters are designed to fit specific kitchen hood models. When purchasing a carbon filter, ensure it matches the type needed for your hood.

In the Globalo Toredo island hood, a TCS 300 carbon filter is used. The TCS filter primarily absorbs unpleasant odours, especially those arising during frying.

Maintaining this aspect ensures that the Toredo hood operates at a maximum efficiency of 784 m3/h while maintaining a low noise level of only 47 dB. This solution is ideal for those with a kitchen island who cannot or prefer not to connect the hood to a ventilation duct. The carbon filter ensures continuous air purification.

The Globalo Divida wall-mounted hood, meanwhile, is equipped with a KSC 300 carbon filter. When used in recirculation mode, this filter ensures that unpleasant odours and moisture are absorbed, making the kitchen air healthier. This square filter measures 22 cm x 22 cm and is of the cassette type, positioned above the standard metal filter included with the hood.

The Divida hood also includes a multi-layer metal filter, which collects greasy particles, preventing them from settling on kitchen cabinets, countertops, and other appliances. It’s equipped with energy-saving LED lighting, perfect for evening cooking and providing a pleasant additional light source.

The unit also has a steam sensor that automatically activates the hood when moisture is detected in the air. The sensor adjusts the performance level accordingly and switches off after the air is filtered.

Extractor hood accessories, such as carbon filters, are essential for using a hood in recirculation mode without a ventilation connection. By using them as recommended, you can enjoy clean, healthy air in your home.
