Find out the hood capacity required to fulfil its purpose of capturing fumes. We offer practical tips and efficient models.
What Capacity Is Required? Understanding Hood Functions
In the kitchen, we perform activities that impact the health of household members. Therefore, we take hygiene in this space seriously. Regular meal preparation is time-consuming, and a hood is an essential appliance to help keep the kitchen clean, alongside a vacuum cleaner or dishwasher. A kitchen hood also plays an important role.
A hood eliminates cooking fumes and absorbs substances detrimental to our health. It performs most effectively when vented through a duct to the outside, working as an extractor. When the air is filtered through a carbon filter and returns to the room, the hood works as a recirculator.
What benefits does a hood provide?
- Protects furniture fronts, fabrics, walls, ceramic wall and floor tiles, and kitchen equipment from accumulating cooking and frying by-products like steam, grease, and odours.
- Facilitates cleaning by preventing steam and dust from binding together, keeping the kitchen and nearby areas cleaner and more pleasant.
- Modern kitchen hoods also eliminate harmful microorganisms, allergens, pollen, viruses, bacteria, and moulds, promoting healthier meal preparation and dining conditions.
- Built-in lighting improves cooking comfort and safety.
- Hoods with striking designs can serve as the main decorative feature of the kitchen.

Required Hood Capacity: Specific Advice
To perform effectively, a hood must have a motor with adequate power relative to the kitchen's size. What capacity is needed for your kitchen? Here’s a simple calculation.
- According to standards, to estimate capacity for medium speed, multiply the kitchen’s size in m³ (area x height) by 9, and by 12 for maximum speed. The right hood should filter all kitchen air at least six times per hour. Thus, the larger the kitchen, the higher the required air absorption capacity.
- Remember that installation errors and maintenance negligence negatively impact hood efficiency. Even with the correct calculations and high-performance models, improper installation won’t allow the hood to reach its full capacity. Proper installation is key.
- For hoods operating as extractors, it’s essential to match the vent outlet’s diameter with the duct dimensions and to use short, smooth, round ducts with a diameter of 15 cm (or rectangular ducts measuring 9 x 22 cm), routed without bends. Narrowing the duct or outlet diameter reduces efficiency. Flat ducts of 22 x 9 or 12 x 6 cm are also acceptable.
- Regularly cleaning the metal filter (monthly, using a dishwasher up to 50°C, where applicable) and replacing the carbon filter in recirculation mode every 3-6 months (depending on use intensity) is essential. Saturated filters significantly lower air absorption.
- Efficiency also suffers from mis-matched hood and cooker sizes. The hood should be equal to or wider than the hob (except for tubular hoods).
- Leaving the hood on for a while after cooking is beneficial, as it absorbs fumes and harmful particles more effectively.
GLOBALO hood motors are designed to reach 200 m³/h on initial settings for quieter operation, allowing conversations, music, and TV enjoyment while cooking. Noise and efficiency levels should meet expectations for satisfactory appliance use.
