How to Clean a Kitchen Hood - User Guide

Kitchen hoods are devices exposed to daily high temperatures, moisture, and various dirt generated during cooking. See how to clean a kitchen hood so that it works long and reliably.

Materials in Kitchen Hoods

Kitchen hoods are made from several main materials. Let's look at what manufacturers typically use to produce their devices. There are 3 main materials used in the production of hoods.

  • Stainless Steel INOX. Also known as chrome-nickel steel. In hoods, it appears as a sheet of varying thickness. The thicker the sheet, the more solid and stable the hood.

  • Toughened Glass. It can be bent (giving the hood various shapes) or flat. The modular design of some hoods allows for easy removal of glass parts for thorough cleaning. The most common types are black, white, or transparent toughened glass.

  • Lacquered Steel. Hoods made from lacquered steel are powder-coated. There are many shades to choose from. Powder coating ensures a streak-free, uniform surface that is easy to clean.

Of course, there are other, less common materials (wood, plastics, laminate, ceramics) from which a kitchen hood can be made. How to clean a specific model can be found in the examples below.

How to Clean a Stainless Steel INOX Kitchen Hood?

A hood made of stainless steel INOX will bring a sense of order, cleanliness, and modernity to our kitchen. Whether we opt for shiny or matte steel, the hood must be cleaned regularly. Stainless steel may vary slightly – depending on the finish used on specific models, the steel coating will look a bit different.

Nevertheless, it is best to leave the cleaning of a stainless steel kitchen hood to specialists. That is why we recommend using dedicated cleaning products. One of them is Berner Inox spray.Berner Inox spray for cleaning hoods

The product is prepared for cleaning matte and polished steel surfaces. It eliminates dirt, dust, and fingerprints. It has preserving properties. Simply regularly wipe the steel elements of the hood with a soft cloth soaked in the product to keep it clean, polished, and protected. Berner spray leaves a thin protective layer on the surface, which prevents dirt from sticking and has antistatic properties.

How to Clean a Toughened Glass Kitchen Hood?

Toughened glass, on the other hand, is a durable material resistant to anything that might happen in the kitchen. It is not afraid of moisture, high temperatures, scratches, or other mechanical damage. Thanks to modern production technology, a toughened glass hood will serve us for many years.

How to Clean Filters in a Kitchen Hood?

There are two types of filters in kitchen hoods:

  • metal filters (usually aluminium), found in all types of hoods

  • carbon filters, used exclusively in recirculators

The job of metal filters is to clean the air of greasy particles, dust, and other dirt accumulating in the kitchen. They are made of thin meshes that trap these particles. Therefore, it is essential to clean the metal filter regularly. Do this once a month. Simply wash the metal filter by hand in water with dishwashing liquid or in the dishwasher. Set the dishwasher to a lower temperature and remove other dishes.

Carbon filters, on the other hand, absorb moisture and neutralise unpleasant odours. The activated carbon granules in them eventually become less effective, so the filter needs to be replaced. This usually occurs every 3-6 months, although we recommend replacing the carbon filter every 4 months. This way, your hood works efficiently and much quieter.

Cleaning kitchen hoods is essential. When done correctly, a purchased device will serve you for many years.
